[ Maintenance & Repairs ] Open Question : Bathroom silicone sealant, why the strong smell and how unhealthy is it?

A contractor came to remove and replace the silicone sealant in our kitchen and bathroom. When we came home that day, he hadn’t left any windows open and the smell was so overpowering that we stayed at a friends’ house for three nights. We spent perhaps five minutes in the house before the place was aired out and left feeling dizzy and nauseous. I was wondering how toxic that was and if the air is safe now. We’ve had the windows open literally for three days straight, but I could still smell something when I popped in yesterday. Does anyone know?
